About Natasha Marshall
Textile & Colour Designer | Artist | Collaborator
I am a Textile and Colour Designer who collaborates with architectural firms and interior textile brands — developing everything from colour palettes to bespoke interior pieces such as rugs, textiles, and wallcoverings.
My deep knowledge across all areas of interiors — particularly curtain textiles, and upholstery fabrics and window treatments — allows me to bring clarity and creativity to each project. Every collaboration begins with an in-depth exploration of colour, the foundation of all my work.
The Language of Colour
I am fascinated by colour, created in nature and by humans in architecture. The starting point for an architectural project is often the surrounding landscape, while for interior collections they often start from my colour diaries — a daily ritual of sketching and documenting the changing colour mixes of the seasons. What drives me is the search for how to bring colour, pattern and textures into our surroundings.
Artistic Practice
Alongside my design practice, I am also an artist and printmaker specialising in Mokulito printing. Each print begins as a drawing or carving on a wood print plate. I also paint in oil on canvas and wood, continuing my exploration of texture, mark-making, and colour.
Background & Manifesto
Before establishing my London Design Studio in 2020, I lived and worked in Glasgow, where I founded my first studio after graduating from the Glasgow School Of Art (1996). There, I created and sold my own collections of textiles and wall coverings, all produced in the UK, while also running a ghost design studio collaborating with mills around the world.
In Glasgow, we built our own design studio and home in collaboration with Architects Cameron Webster. Both spaces were developed as reuse projects — transforming a disused Glue Factory into a working design studio, and a former furniture restorers workshop into my home. Each project breathed new life into existing buildings and went on to receive recognition: in 2009, the studio won the GIA & RIBA Awards for Best Small Works, while my home was shortlisted for a Scottish Design Award and, in 2013, became the GIA Residential Winner and was shortlisted for an RIBA Award.
Beyond my studio work, I am committed to contributing to the wider design community. Since 2018, I have been a Judge and Council Member for the Design Guild Mark, and previously as an Advisory Council Member for The Prince’s Trust, now Kings Trust. I have also been a Board Member for the Scottish Textile Association, The Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust, and the Entrepreneurial Exchange.
