Self building my home

Why did I get involved?

I teamed up with the architects Cameron Webster to create a family home in the West End of Glasgow.

The building was an old furniture restorers workshop that we had lived opposite for a number of years – a tight urban space that needed a fresh eye and an imaginative approach.

How did I help?

We chose a limited palette of materials which allowed the light, together with patterned fabrics and rug created for the house, to become the dominant force within the spaces.

The shutters on the building meant that when the curtains were half open in the mornings you could still have light and privacy. The whole downstairs facade had a hidden curtain to pull across at night, meaning no black glass in the living area and a much cosier space.

What was the impact?

From an unpromising and overlooked tight urban space, this became a home with light and views of the sky in all areas of the house, as well as a feeling of privacy.

It won the GIA Residential Award in 2013 and was shortlisted for an RIBA award that same year.

But most importantly it was a tranquil, joyful place for me to live.
