A nautical theme

Natasha’s creative talent, practical approach, eye for colour and pattern was paramount in the journey from start to finish’

Why did I get involved?

The Salt Lodge is in a great location, right on the waterfront and overlooking Troon harbour. This was the perfect opportunity to return to my fascination with hotels – a fascination which first started when I worked with Amanda Rosa and her team on the Malmaison Hotels in the late 1990s.

Amanda’s attention to detail and sense of how a hotel room should work, with the plug in the right place for the hairdryer, the most comfortable bed with luxury bedding, through to the right items for a luxury stay, have stayed with me ever since.

Together with the Architect ARPL, project management team BCCqs and the client, we developed an existing building and a new build into this timeless, nautical hotel, creating small and perfectly formed apartments that provide everything you need for a wonderful stay.

How did I help?

I spent time on the beach in Troon, photographing the landscape and seascape to create a colour palette for both the interior and the exterior of the building.

I then chose textiles and wallcoverings with a nautical theme, as well as artwork for the walls, using my own local photography and photographs by local photographer Marc Turner.

I ensured all fabrics passed the required fire-ratings and Martindale upholstery tests to allow for long-lasting and easy-to-maintain hotel rooms.

What was the impact?

The quality and textures of the chosen fabrics and artwork are distinct and set The Salt Lodge apart from the competition.’

I am very proud of this project which was created on a tight budget due to the huge development costs that come from its position right next to the marina.

We won many awards, including Booking.com Traveller Review Award back to back since 2020, 5 Gold Anchor Ward, and the reviews have been amazing, picking up on how well the rooms work, how comfortable the beds are, and how the hotel caters for every need.

Kind words from Stephen Bennie, Director of The Salt Lodge:

'Natasha Marshall worked with us to develop our vision in the design of the Salt Lodge Hotel apartments – helping us to fulfil the full potential of the site.

Her creative talent, practical approach, eye for colour and pattern was paramount in the journey from start to finish and key to the project's success.

Her contemporary clean design approach to interiors means the apartments are comfortable and a real treat for our guests to stay in, as the reviews are showing. She really thought through our guests’ every need, for short and long stays, in the choice of all items for the apartments.

Natasha managed to create a feeling of space in very small rooms which feel bright, clean and contemporary, whilst also managing to be comfortable and cosy at night.

From concept to completion, Natasha Marshall has been an instrumental part of the team in delivering the success of this project. We look forward to working with her in the future'.

Kind words from Carolyn Elder, Director of Yacht Havens:

‘Starting from scratch to design the interiors of our new hotel rooms was daunting. However we immediately trusted Natasha’s calm and artistic approach to colour mixing, creating a unique Scandi-Scot look with subtle nods to our waterfront location. The result is inspired, calming yet fresh and modern. The quality and textures of the chosen fabrics and artwork are distinct and sets The Salt Lodge apart from the competition.

We are delighted with the results and without doubt this has conributed to the success and popularity of The Salt Lodge’.
